Evelyn L. Waters Polkinghorne was born on March 20, 1915 in Wachapreague, Virginia to John C. and Georgia Waters. After being educated in the Somerset Public Schools and then the Princess Anne Academy (now known as the University of Maryland) she moved to New York. While in New York, she met and married the love of her life, Charles Polkinghorne, who predeceased her. She moved to Bayside, New York in 1954. Evelyn had a beautiful alto singing voice. Her immense talent enabled her to sing at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York with the late Marion Anderson. Mrs. Polkinghorne retired as a Supervisor after 30 years of service in the IBM Section of the State of New York in Albany, New York. She was a very active member of the Bayside Senior Center in Bayside, New York and was a lifetime member of the National Council of Negro Women. Six weeks ago, she moved to Roselle, New Jersey to be closer to her family. Evelyn answered the Master's calling at 3:00 am on Sunday morning, November 28, 2010 after a painful illness. She leaves to mourn, two sisters, Sarah Waters Woolford and Louise Waters Rock; a special niece, Delores Waters McNeil and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. "He Only Takes The Best" God saw she was getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around her and whispered "Come with Me." With tear filled eyes, we watched her suffer and fade away. Although we loved her deeply, we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Evelyn L. Waters Polkinghorne.
