Evelyn Smethers, 96, of Ft. Wayne, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2011. Born January 8, 1915 in Warren, Ind. she was the daughter of Earl and Leola Lantis. Before marriage to her husband John, Evelyn had been a newspaper reporter and later worked at the Fort Wayne library. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church and a past member of Delta Theta Tau, a Philanthropic Sorority. "She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a kind and generous women." Evelyn enjoyed golfing, crafting, sewing, playing bridge, gardening, reading and socializing. She is survived by her children, Steven (Pat) Smethers of Columbia City, Ind. and Susan Boxell of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Rich Kolkman, Russell (Brenda) Kolkman, all of Fort Wayne, Michelle (Gary) Roeback of Markle, Ind. and Wendy Myers of Bluffton, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Bradley Roeback of Markle, Ind., Brandon Myers, Elisabeth and Claire Kolkman, all of Fort Wayne. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John Smethers, her parents and two brothers. Service is 2:00 pm, Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at D.O. McComb and Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Avenue with visitation one hour prior. Rev. John Gardner officiating. Visitation also from 4 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home.
