Smith, Everett M. Jr. "Smitty" age 87, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, April 27, 2012 at his home following an extended illness. He was born July 3, 1924 the son of the late Everett M. Smith, Sr. and Nellie Fay Seymour Smith in Knoxville, TN where he resided. He graduated from Central High School. He played basketball for The University of Tennessee in 1942-43. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps under the 722nd Squadron, 450th Bombardment Group in 1943. He flew 46 combat missions as a crew member of a B-24 Heavy Bomber Group. Awarded the European, African and Middle Eastern Service Medals with one silver star and one bronze star; Air Medal with 3 Oak-Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He received an Honorable Discharge from the 15th Air Force in 1945. He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Business Admin at the University of Tennessee in 1948. Everett retired as a Certified Public Accountant in 1989 having been in partnership with Richard Norris. Preceded in death by his son, David Michael Smith; grandson, Kevin Michael McCarter; sister-in-law, Jane Smith. Survivors: wife of 67 years, Jessie Walker Smith; daughter, Julie Anne Smith Hembree; son-in-law, William Ted Hembree; granddaughter, Jennifer Lytle; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Mikel McCarter; brother, Dr. Edwin W. Smith; several nieces, nephews and life-long friends. Family will receive friends Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Stevens Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by a funeral procession to Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 12:30 p.m. graveside service and interment with Rev. George Doebler officiating. Serving the family, Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway.
