F. Lorraine "Larry" Ward, 92, of Marquette and Gwinn, passed away Monday evening, October 24, 2011 at Marquette General Hospital after a short illness. She was born on August 30, 1919 in Marquette to the late Glen and Delila (Halsted) Minzey. Larry received a degree in chemistry from the former Northern Normal College. She was married to Richard E. Ward on September 30, 1941 in Lansing and later assisted her husband in managing the family business, Ward Beverage Company. While her children were growing up, Larry was both a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader for many years. She was a devout Catholic and was active in her parish community while still raising her 14 children. In her free time, she loved to golf, play Bridge as well as sew and knit. Survivors include her 14 children, Dr. Richard J. (Lynn) Ward of Bowling Green, OH, Col. Thomas E. (Susan) Ward of West Salem, WI, Henry P. Ward of Marquette, Katherine L. Ross of New Castle, CO, William L. Ward of Peshtigo, WI, Michael J. Ward of Marquette, Daniel J. (Melissa) Ward of Gladstone, Elizabeth S. "Betty" Redd of Bloomington, IL, Peter P. (Darlene) Ward of Bay Village, OH, Connie A. (Randy) Awrey of Gwinn, Gregory D. (Cindy) Ward of Beverly Hills, MI, Barbara J. (Richard) Ward-Thomas of Gwinn, Andrew C. (Marie) Ward of Marquette and Naida M. (Gerry) Weinert of Iron Mountain, MI; also 28 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, Richard E. Ward on August 29, 2008. Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home today from 5 to 7 p.m. where a parish prayer service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry VanDamme officiating. Visitation will also be held at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the Mass. Burial will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery. Mrs. Ward's grandsons will act as her casket bearers. Memorials are preferred to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in lieu of flowers.
