Capt. Fitz O. Lufkin Jr., 76, USNR Retired Capt. Fitz O. Lufkin Jr., 76, USNR, Retired of Gloucester, died on Tuesday morning, October 11, 2011 at the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Gloucester on October 24, 1934, son of the late Fitz and Edna (Perry) Lufkin. Fitz attended Gloucester public schools, where he was a recipient of the Sawyer Medal. Upon graduation from Gloucester High School in 1952, he was awarded an NROTC scholarship to attend Harvard, where he commanded the Student Brigade his senior year. Following graduation in 1956, he served three years active duty in the United States Navy. He was recalled to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1962 and remained in the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Captain after twenty years of service. He maintained a life-long connection with the officers he served with during his time in the Navy. Fitz was a well known real estate broker in Gloucester for over forty years and was a co-founder and President of Lufkin & Brown Realtors. During his career, he served as president of the Cape Ann Board of Realtors and the Gloucester Rotary Club, and also sat on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Ipswich for many years. He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Marianne (Forrest) Lufkin of Gloucester; his daughter, Fay L. Sims and her husband LTC Douglas A. Sims, US Army, of Lincoln, MA; two sons, Fitz O. Lufkin III and his wife Ellen (Field) of Gloucester and Dean F. Lufkin of Jupiter, FL; four grandchildren, Fitz IV, Christopher, and Olivia Lufkin and Madeleine A. Sims; his mother-in-law, Georgia Forrest. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Friday, October 14, at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There will be no visiting hours and the burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Friends of Seacoast, Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 292 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.
