Fitzgerald (Sonny) Roberts was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on August 29, 1925. Sonny was the son of the late Fitzgerald Roberts and Ethel Phyllis Roberts Lewis and stepson of James Lewis, Sr. Sonny attended school in New York and later joined the US Marine Corp. Sonny loved to sing, play pool and most of all bowling which became his life of entertainment. He took bowling very seriously. He sang to all who had a birthday on the microphone at Jersey Lanes in Linden, New Jersey. Sonny had such a love for people and no one was a stranger. When he told you a joke he would almost fall out laughing before he finished. He truly loved his grands and great grandchildren. Many times he would bring the kids to bowl, where he loved to be amongst his bowling friends. Sonny departed this life on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at home after a short illness, with his family by his bedside. Sonny leaves to cherish his memory, his adoring wife, Catherine Roberts; 1 sister, Ruth Welters of Linden, NJ; 1 brother, James Lewis (Katherine) of Linden, NJ; 2 daughters, Rosilyn Watson (Donald) of Rocky Mt., NC and Debra Edwards of Linden, NJ; 5 sons, Gerald Roberts (Myrna) of South Plainfield, NJ, Raymond Roberts of Roselle, NJ, Kevin Roberts (Gail) of Wrens, GA, Gary Smith (Jaraysha) Smith of Baltimore, MD and Ronald Smith of Irvington, NJ; 20 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dearly devoted friends.
