Floyd Francis Gonterman, age 85, of Washington, died Monday, August 20, 2012 at the Washington County Hospital following a brief illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Maureen Howard officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 noon Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday evening. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. A memorial has been established to the Washington County Hospital. Online condolences may be sent for Floyd's family at www.jonesfh.com.

Floyd was born September 25, 1926 in Jefferson County, Iowa the son of Floyd Franklin and Rose (Clark) Gonterman. He attended country school near Libertyville, Iowa until enlisting in the United States Army during World War II. He was later transferred to the Army Air Corps. Floyd was united in marriage to Nela Bernice Young on August 13, 1949 in Davenport, Iowa.

Floyd had been a resident of Washington since 1951. He was employed as a welder at Keatings Welding and later as a foreman at the McCleery Cummings Factory until his retirement in 1984.

Floyd was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a proud member of the VFW and of the Coachmen Camping Club. He enjoyed camping with his family, motorcycles, fishing, and playing cards. He loved listening to bluegrass music, and attended the Bluegrass Festival in Salem, Iowa every year until 2006.

Floyd is survived by three sons: Gerry Gonterman and wife Vickie of Washington, Iowa; Dale Gonterman and wife Cindy of Washington, Iowa; and Bruce Gonterman of Oelwein, Iowa; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ralph Gonterman and wife Betty of Keosauqua, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Nela, in 1999.
