Townshend – Frances "Carolyn" Goodrich Wheeler, 82, of Lamson Street in Brattleboro, died Tuesday afternoon, November 22, 2011 at Grace Cottage Hospital following a period of failing health. She was born in Waltham, MA on November 2, 1929, the daughter of Carroll and Florence (Gillan) Goodrich. Following her parent's divorce, she lived with her father. When her father became disabled, her aunt moved in with them to help care for her, her father, and her sister. Carolyn spent the first four years of her schooling at Arlington School in St. Johnsbury, where her aunt was principal. She then attended fifth grade in Hardwick at a one room school near the Goodrich farm. In 1940 her family, along with her aunt, moved to Newbury where she attended and graduated from Newbury High School, class of 1948. After moving to Brattleboro in November 1948, she went to work for the Holstein-Freisian Association. She retired in December 1981 following 32 years of faithful service with the association. On May 8, 1949, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brattleboro, she was married to Gordon E. Wheeler from Haverhill, NH. Carolyn has been a member of Centre Congregational Church for over sixty years. She loved to travel, cook and read, and enjoyed bowling and dancing in her earlier years. She had a love for all animals and through the years she and Gordon owned many dogs and cats. Besides her loving husband of 62 years, she is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Dorothea Hall. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at Centre Congregational Church with Rev. Carra McFadden, pastor, officiating. Burial will be held in Ladd Street Cemetery in Haverhill, NH on Monday at 11:00 A.M. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until the start of the service. Memorial donations in Carolyn's name may be made to Grace Cottage Hospital, c/o Dr. Robert Backus, P.O. Box 216, Townshend, VT 05353 or to Centre Congregational Church, 193 Main Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
