FRANCIS XAVIER PENDARVIS
Francis Xavier Pendarvis, 85, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2011, in his home.
Frank was born January 7, 1926, in Houston, Texas, the first of two sons of Vera and Francis Xavier Pendarvis, Sr. His father passed away when Frank was 6. Frank graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston, and then attended the University of Notre Dame on an ROTC scholarship. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1945 with a degree in chemical engineering, attended midshipmen's school at Columbia University, and then served honorably as an officer in the Navy during World War II, continuing in the US Navy Reserve until 1952.
He returned to Houston in 1946, and built a career with Humble Oil Co. (now ExxonMobil) for the next 40 years. He married Edna Margaret Roach in 1950, and the couple had two sons, John Francis Pendarvis and David Brian Pendarvis. The family lived in Texas, California, and Australia. Edna predeceased him in 2005, and Frank moved to Pacific Regent in La Jolla, where he resided until his death.
Frank loved golf, travel, barbecuing, good jokes, watching sports and the sunset, and most of all, his family. He was fiercely loyal to Notre Dame. His deep religious faith guided his life and comforted him at his death.
Frank is survived by his son John and daughter-in-law Betsie Pendarvis of Roanoke, Virginia; his son David and daughter-in-law Marty Pendarvis of La Jolla, California; grandson Justin Pendarvis of Monrovia, Liberia; grand-daughter Lisa DeLorenzo of South Bend, Indiana; grand-daughter Christi Murphy of Boston, Massachusetts; grand-daughter Mary Pendarvis of New Orleans, Louisiana; and great-grandchildren Caleb, Felicity, and two-weeks-old Josiah Xavier DeLorenzo, of South Bend.
Frank Pendarvis was kind, loving, and generous. He will be missed by all who knew him. Frank's family would like to extend profound and heartfelt thanks to the team of caregivers who supported him in the last years of his life.
A visitation will be held at All Hallows Catholic Church in La Jolla on December 28, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, with a prayer service at 6:00 pm.
A funeral mass will be held December 31, 2011, 10:00 am, at Saint Anne's Catholic Church in Houston, with visitation preceding at 9:00 am. Burial will follow at Forest Park Cemetery in Houston. Funeral arrangements are made through Bradshaw-Carter Memorial & Funeral Services in Houston; and El Camino Memorial – Pacific Beach in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to San Diego Hospice Foundation, Inc., 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103-1407.
