ARCADIA LAKES - Funeral service for Lieutenant Colonel Frank Howland Zander, US Air Force, retired, 83 will be held at 1:00pm Friday, December 23, 2011 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Burial will follow with full military honors in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00pm Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbia Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars c/o LTC. Frank Zander died on Tuesday, December 20, 2011. Born in 1928 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was one of two children of the late Frank Leopold Zander and Dorothy Howland Zander. He, his sister and his parents moved to St. Louis, MO around 1932, then to Peoria, IL in 1938 and finally to Oakland, CA in 1943.
As an Air Force ROTC cadet, Frank earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California (Berkeley). He later earned his Master of Science in engineering degree at Arizona State University (Tempe). During 25 years in the Air Force he completed primary, basic and advanced flying training; flew fighter and trainer airplanes, including a combat tour flying F-4D Phantom II aircraft in Southeast Asia and an instrument flight instructor tour, and served in engineering research and development tours at three Air Force Laboratories and the Air Force's Office of Scientific Research. His awards included the Distinguished Flying Cross (2), Bronze Star, Air Medal (6), Air Force Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (3), Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After retiring from the Air Force, he taught electrical engineering as an Associate Professor at South Carolina State University and as an Adjunct Professor at Shaw Air Force for several years, and then worked for South Carolina Electric & Gas as the Nuclear Technical Training Manager at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station at Jenkinsville, SC for 10 years, retiring fully in 1992.
In 1982, Frank joined The Military Order of World Wars (MOWW) and served progressively as commander at the chapter, department and region levels and as a national officer, attaining the rank of General Staff Emeritus. He loved the Military Order for its focuses on patriotism, continued service to our nation and youth leadership and became a perpetual member. He was also a member of The American Legion Post 6, the Air Force Association and the Military Officers Association of America, He also served on the Congaree District Committee, Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America.
In 1986, he was elected president of the newly formed and incorporated Cary Lake Homeowners Association in Arcadia Lakes, SC and held this position for 20 years.
In 1949, Frank married the beautiful Barbara May Allen in Oakland, CA. They had four children, Frank Allen Zander, Gregory Mark Zander, Sharon Elizabeth Zander and David Howland Zander. He was predeceased by his two older sons, Frank and Mark. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Richard Bryson of Perrysburg, OH; son and daughter-in-law, David and Patricia Zander of Columbia; daughters-in-law, Edwina Zander of Cerritos, CA, and Vienna Zander of Taft, CA; sister and brother-in-law, Rae and Richard Duffus of Livermore, CA; sister-in-law and husband, Beverly and Frank Rigley of Pleasant Hill, CA; cousin, Raymond Watt of Escondido, CA; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Col. Zander greatly enjoyed his family, reading, bridge and fishing.
