Passed away peacefully in his home in San Leandro, California, surrounded by and in the care of his family. Survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Grace; son, Chris and wife, Linda; and sister, Betty Hayden. Born and raised in Oakland, Frank graduated from Oakland Technical High School where he lettered in track, specializing in the high hurdles. He also proudly served in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II where he met his wife-to-be. Frank will be remembered for his 45 continuous years of volunteer service to the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). He selflessly coached basketball and baseball and had a positive impact on literally thousands of boys and girls throughout the East Bay. In addition to serving at St. Louis Bertrand in Oakland and St. Leander in San Leandro, Frank also found time to coach at Head-Royce School (Oakland), Bishop O'Dowd High School (Oakland), Holy Names High School (Oakland) and Hayward High School, where he helped the junior varsity girls' team go undefeated in league play for the first time in the school's history. Frank will be missed not only by his family and loved ones, but by the multitude of young men and women—many of whom have gone on to become mentors themselves—whose personal growth was fostered by the coach's advocacy of fair play, adherence to ethical standards and generous giving of his time and himself. His impact was profound and lasting. On Wednesday, December 9, at 7:00 p.m., please join Frank's family and friends in coming together to celebrate his life at St. Leander's Church, 550 W. Estudillo Ave., San Leandro, CA 94577. There will be a mass of remembrance, followed by a parish reception. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting that a donation be made to the Frank Kemp Scholarship Fund in care of St. Leander's parish.
