Vernon- Frank W. Johnson, Sr., 82, of Pond Road died peacefully early Monday morning, September 19, 2011 at Vernon Green Nursing Home. Mr. Johnson was born at home on Pond Road on August 3, 1929 the son of Ernest and Irene (Fairman) Johnson. He was raised in Vernon where he attended public school. A longtime employee for the town of Vernon, he worked as custodian for the town office building, drove school bus and worked for the highway department, retiring in 2009 following over 30 dedicated years of faithful service. Previously he worked at the former Smead Lumber Company and during his earlier years assisted with the day to day operation of his family's farm. Active civically, he was a member of the Vernon Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years, was a member of the Town Picnic committee and was a member of the Vernon Historians. He also held membership in the former Vernon Grange. Mr. Johnson was known for his steadfast work ethic and spirit of generosity. He took great pride in assisting his son's build their homes and well as the family sawmill off of Pond Road. He also enjoyed putting around his home. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed time shared with his family. Of his other pastimes and interests, he liked to play cards, square and polka dancing and his beloved cat "Marvin." On March 19, 1948 in Vernon he was married to Evelyn Sanderson who predeceased him. Survivors include, one son, Dennis Johnson of Hendersonville, N.C., two daughters, Alane Bruce of Brattleboro and Paula Ewen of Vernon, one sister, Ernestine Shedd of Bernardston, eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great- great grandson. Additionally he leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends. He was predeceased by two sons, Douglas Johnson and Frank Johnson, Jr. and one brother, Marvin Johnson. Graveside committal services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. in Tyler Cemetery on Pond Road with Pastor Bruce Burks officiating. There are no calling hours at the funeral home.
