Frederick Lawrence Mailhes, went to his maker on October 7, 2011, after a brave battle with cancer. Larry loved the Lord. He was born October 25, 1946 to Albin Roland Mailhes and Constance Marjorie Dean Mailhes in Norfolk, VA. Mr. Mailhes graduated from Virginia Beach High School Class of 1964. He attended Old Dominion University. A proud member of Duck's Unlimited, Larry enjoyed duck hunting with his two partners Ronnie Cason and Joe Houska, as well as his brother Al and nephew Trey, both on Back Bay and the Currituck Sound. Larry was a star basketball player in high school, and later successfully coached many youth league teams. A fine golfer, Larry thoroughly enjoyed two trips to the Master's Golf Tournament with his friend in the carpet business, John Robinson. Mr. Mailhes was an owner-partner of Special Products, Inc. with John Gray. Larry is survived by his wife, Vera Dionne; and son, Frederick Lawrence Mailhes, Jr. (Karen). Larry, Jr. had the pleasure of having his father as an assistant coach on his baseball and basketball teams; a brother Albin Roland Mailhes, Jr. (Rose); sister, Rosemary Delacey (Richard); and his beloved granddaughter, Skylar Mailhes, who used to call Larry at work and say, "Granddaddy, I want you to come home now!" Larry would hurry home and they would play together. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Mailhes is also survived by an Uncle Frederick J. Dean III and his wife Dell. A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2011, in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel with burial at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2011, in Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad or to a church or charity of one's choice. Condolences may be made to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com. Larry wants all of you to know, he did not pay for this obituary.
