Mr. Gary E. Walton, 64, passed away at Gaston Memorial Hospital on Sunday, January 30, 2011 after a battle with cancer which he fought with his typical courage and positive spirit. Gary was born on March 20, 1946 in Kingsport, TN and was the son of Mrs. Juanita Mayes Walton and the late Ralph Afton Walton. He grew up there and attended East Tennessee State University. In addition to his mother of Kingsport, TN, Gary is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sue Woods Walton of Gastonia, son Gregory and wife Donna of Weddington, NC; daughter Candice Conner and husband Tyler of Jamestown, NC, and three grandchildren, Parker Walton, Chloe and Callie Conner; sister-in-law, Connie Walton; mother-in-law, Mrs. Fawn Woods, both of Kingsport, TN; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Beeler Walton, and father-in-law, who loved him dearly, Robert Woods, Jr.. In his early career, Gary began a lifelong love of personal motivation and development through his work as a trainer for the Dale Carnegie organization. Gary and his family moved to Gastonia where he managed Snelling & Snelling offices. He later served as CEO of the ELLCO Company for 28 years. In 2001, he founded and became CEO of Comforce, a recruiting firm specializing in medical personnel, with offices in Hickory, NC and Kingsport, TN. Gary's family remembers him as a godly and loving husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed. He served at New Hope Baptist Church in Gastonia where he and Sue worked in youth leadership, and then at East Baptist where he was a Deacon, Church Moderator, Sunday School Teacher and long-time choir member. Gary loved helping people in career development, and his personal hobbies included physical fitness, reading, and gardening. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 2, 2011 from 6-8PM, at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. A funeral service will be held 2PM, Thursday, February 3, 2011 at East Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Parker and Dr. Robert Winecoff officiating.
