To the Lonz family; I am so sorry for your loss. Gary was a kind, caring man and he will be missed. I didn't spend much time with him in recent years, but I thoroughly enjoyed the few conversations I had with him. Gary was always attentive, sincerely interested, and endlessly fascinating. Surely Gary is now in a place where he can be truly joyful.

Gary you were always there for me when I would get confused or needed help. But even before scouting you were always like my second father, or my uncle.

Gary was my best friend, best-man, and like a brother to me – Gary was always there for me. There will not be a day that goes by that I will not think of Gary and all the places we went and the good times that we had! I am missing you!

I didn't know Gary real well, but I do know that he gave generously of his time and knowledge for boy scouting. I appreciate all that Gary did to help my son, as well as many other boys earn merit badges in order to advance in the program. We certainly will miss Gary's Expertise and presence in the troop.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sorrowful time.

I never told you this but out of all the people in the world, other than my immediate family, you were the most influential person in my life. Your honesty often hurt but honesty often does. The time I asked you to lie for me when I shot the 22 shell from my wrist rocket and it went into my finger, you said no. You told me it was not right for me to ask you. That bothered me to no end but you were right it was wrong of me to ask.
You taught me bravery; the only fight I have ever known you to be in was because of me. I was around 9 you 10 and the two kids that wanted to fight me were 11 or 12. I look back on that and wonder was that because we were best friends or because you knew it was wrong that the older kids wanted to fight a younger boy, knowing you, probably the latter. I am sorry for running home that day and leaving you there to get beat up. You don’t have any idea how much; you sticking up for me and me running scared impacted my life.
Gary I was always so proud of how smart you were. You had such a gift with math. I always thought you were a genius and you probably were. I never beat you in chess but you don’t know how good I felt when the game lasted longer than 10 minutes. The thing I liked most is you never boasted you were always so humble. I loved playing games with you.
Here we are 44 years later and you are still teaching me lessons. I am sorry I was not there for you the past few years; I know you would have been there for me. I want you to know when ever I count my friends you are and always will be on the top of that list

Gary was so quiet and modest that perhaps not everyone realized he was also brilliant. But his old and close friends know it. I admired his intellect tremendously and always was interested in his point of view. He was a kind, gentle, quiet man – and a dear friend. Distance and time -- and not even death -- can change that.

Scouting lost one of it's great leaders. My son Alex Vigil and myself were lucky to have known Gary. Our thoughts and prayer are with his family during this sad time.
