Gary Wayne Atkinson
Gary Wayne Atkinson, 61, of Midway, went home to be with the Lord on November 14, 2011.
He was born April 23, 1950 in Helen WV. The son of the late Burless and Jessie Atkinson
Gary was a retired employee of the West Virginia Turnpike as a snow removal technician, along with the Courtesy Patrol. He was a dedicated member of the Midway First Church of God. He loved the Lord and his church family.
Gary enjoyed Nascar, playing guitar and reconnecting with old friends on Face book, but the joy of his life was his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by two sisters; Infant, Sharon Rose Atkinson; Carol Atkinson Canaday; Two brothers Bobby Ray and James Basil Atkinson; Brother-in-Law Richard Gene French; Infant granddaughter Brittany Faith Mitcham.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 28 years Violet French Atkinson. Step-mother Alice Hargis Owen Atkinson, of Belleville, OH; Four sons and Daughter-in-Laws: Allen and Bronwyn Atkinson, of Winchester, VA; David and Lori Mitcham, of Riner VA; Jimmy and Bridget Mitcham, of McCoy, VA; and Bobby and Rhonda Mitcham of Newport, VA. Gary was the proud grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, as well as one additional great-grand-child on the way. Five siblings: Lucille Atkinson and Marvin Fuller, of Conyers, GA; Edsel and Sue Atkinson, of Reno, NA; Curtis and Mary Ann Atkinson, of Ypsilanti, MI; Sandi Atkinson Taylor, of Beckley, WV; Dale and Cathy Atkinson, of Garfield Heights, OH. Mother-in-Law: Louise French of Stephenson, WV. He also leaves behind a host of family and friends, and his family of co-workers at the West Virginia Turnpike Authority. Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 18, 2011 at Midway First Church of God, with the Rev. Richard Walker officiating.
Friends may gather with the family on Friday, November 18, 2011 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the church.
In keeping with Gary's wishes following the service he will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
