Geneva Jean King was born in St. Louis, Missouri May 8, 1945 to the union of Mattie and James King. Father, James and 2 brothers, Roosevelt and Bernell preceded her in death. Jean as we often called her was raised by a loving and caring mother, who gave her everything that any child could wish for. She went to the best schools; St. Ann's Elementary, Rosatti Kane High School and after graduating with honors, she was accepted into one of the best colleges out of state, however, she chose not to leave St. Louis. Jean continued her education at Harris Stowe State University and Forest Park Community College, where she also received certificates and honors. In 1965 Geneva was one of the first African Americans to be hired at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She started out as a long Distance Operator, later becoming a records clerk and from there being promoted to "Supervisor". Jean later chose to return into the clerical field. She worked at SBC for 40+ years and later retired. Jean was very active with the Boys and Girls Club of America, which was one of her great passions; she received numerous awards and recognitions. Jean had 3 special friends in her life: Van, Carolyn and Evelyn, which she called her sisters. The four of them have been together since childhood, always watching out for each other, they stayed together until her death. She was "The Boss" at least that was what she thought (smile). While working at SBC, she met another young lady, who became special to Jean; Florence, her play daughter, who she referred to as "My Baby". Not known to many of us, Jean had been sick for months, being the strong person that she was, she just didn't want to worry us, especially Mom. Geneva Jean King crossed over into a better place after a long suffering. The Lord was ready for her to come home. On January 16, 2012 at Christian Hospital Northeast with her Mom and Mom's friend, Sandy by her side, she entered into His Kingdom. She leaves to cherish her memories: a loving mother; a host of SBC friends; Thelma; her sisters, Evelyn, Van and "Sista"; play daughter, Florence; 1 niece and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. To God Be The Glory. This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Geneva King. You are invited to add a Tribute in her memory.
