Genevieve Elam Hayes, "Jennie", 89, a resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis for over 20 years and previously of Alexandria, VA, died August 15 at her home.
She was born April 29, 1922, in Upper Montclair, NJ, to the late George and Jennie Elam, and graduated from Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, NJ. She attended Essex Junior College for her secretarial training, and also attended Newark Rutgers University with a major in business. She enjoyed her career as a secretary at the Patterson, New Jersey YWCA. She was a member of the Montclair Board of Education and was Executive Secretary to the Executive Officer of the DDA. She ended her career as a computer specialist.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Hayes Jr., who died in 1982; brother, Everett Elam; and sister, Lucretia Turpin.
She is survived by her nephew, Clyde Turpin, his wife Robin Tapia, and their two sons, Logan and Spencer Turpin of Oro Valley, AZ.
A visitation will be held at 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 22 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 2700 South 19th St., Arlington, VA. Interment National Memorial Park in Falls Church, VA.
