George Charles Tomasic, Jr. 72, died Saturday in UNC Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Pittsburgh, PA to George C. and Elizabeth H. Tomasic, he was raised in the North Braddock section of Pittsburgh. He spent four years in the Air Force prior to moving to Durham in 1957. George joined Tar Heel Barbershop in 1958, becoming its owner in 1972. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a faithful usher for many years and member of the Knights of Columbus.
George Tomasic was a bright-eyed, happy and colorful fellow who enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a Chapel Hill fixture - a veritable part of the heart and soul of the Franklin Street business district. He knew virtually all of Chapel Hill's notable people, cut the hair of many celebrities and accrued countless customer friends over several generations. George's favorite daily ritual was gathering with his breakfast cronies at Sutton's Drug Store to "hold court" and solve the world's problems.
Surviving are his sons, Chris Tomasic and wife, Marilyn of Durham and Albert Kim Jensen and wife, Melissa Jewett of Durham; grandsons, Tyler, Robbie and Patrick Tomasic; and six brothers, Larry, Bobby, Jimmy, Bernard, Billy and Francis Tomasic. He was predeceased by his wife Fran Tomasic in 1996.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 10:30 AM Wednesday from Immaculate Conception Church. Interment following in St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit 7-9 PM Tuesday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Donations in George's memory may be made to UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.
