George J. Filsinger was born April 27, 1923 in O'Neill, Nebraska to Mr. & Mrs. Jospeh M. Filsinger. His family moved to Oregon when he was a young man where he attended Sellwood Grade School and graduated from Benson High School. Since living by the Oaks Park Skating Rink, George spent many an afternoon there and met his wife to be Helen DeVeny. They both loved to skate and made many life time friends there. George was an enlistee in the US Army from 1943 to 1946 and was a paratrooper in the 101 Airborne "to make the country safe for all the younger generation" he told everyone. When George returned from the service he and Helen were married on June 22, 1946. In 1978 George retired at age 55 from Pacific NW Bell after 32 years with many memorable stories. He was an avid Ham radio enthusiast and delighted in attending the Ham fairs. He and Helen enjoyed their time together with family and friends. George loved to tinker and repair anything from the house to cars. If there was any doubt on a repair, George would find a way. One phone call was all it took to ask George for help and he would be there wearing his blue and white overalls with his tool box in hand. George was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. Through all of lifes challenges, George persevered, maintaining his keen sense of humor while whistling a song wherever he went. He was much loved and will be greatly missed. George is survived by his three children, Eileen Long, Marty Filsinger and Brad Filsinger; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Tuesday September 7th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. A funeral will be held on Wednesday September 8th at 11:00 AM. Both will be at Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 6705 SE 14th Ave. Portland, OR 97202. In Lieu of flowers, gifts of remembrance may be made to the Alzheimer's Association and the American Diabetes Association.
