George G. Russell, age 84, of Merrill, died peacefully Easter morning April 8, 2012 surrounded by family at Pine Crest Nursing Home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. George was born June 30, 1927 in Plainfield, New Jersey, to the late Laurence and Mildred (Smith) Russell. George attended Merrill High School prior to serving with the United States Navy during WWII, and later returned to complete his high school education. Following graduation George attended Ripon College and Law School at UW Madison. He and Nancy Emerich were united in marriage in Merrill, July 20, 1957. George began his law career and had his own law office in Merrill and proudly served a wide variety of clients for over 50 years. His work included serving as City Attorney for the City of Merrill, serving on the Lincoln County Bank Board of Directors, and attorney for Holy Cross Hospital for many years. He served as court commissioner for the Lincoln County Circuit Court and served on the Board of Governors for the State Bar of Wisconsin. He was a life-long member of the former St. Robert's and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a member of the Old Timers Club, 31 Club, Silver "M" Club, Yeti Club, Lincoln Stock Club, Merrill Historical Society, and was a founder of the downtown coffee club. George was a wonderful husband, father and papa, and always had time for his family. He was an avid sports fan, with the Packers, Badgers and Blue Jays topping his list. He enjoyed his time as a private pilot and showing Brittany Spaniels. His true passion was being outdoors, including hunting, fishing, spending time at the cabin in Newood and cottage in Harrison Hills. Survivors include: wife: Nancy, 5 children: Lyndon (Debra) Russell; Round Lake Beach, IL, and their children, George and Lyndon, Leah (George) Hoedeman; Eden Prairie, MN, and their children, Alexis and Ryan, Robert Russell; Merrill, and his children, Kylie and Eric, Paul (Kati) Russell, Madison and their son, Nick, Kathryn (Robert) Klinter, Green Bay, and their children, Emily and Ben, Two sisters-in-law: Jan Russell, Merrill and Joanne Honburg, La Habra, CA George was preceded in death by his parents, Laurence and Mildred Russell, 3 brothers Phillip, Richard and Robert Russell, and daughter-in-law: Kim Russell. Visitation will be Thursday April 12, from 4-8pm at Waid Funeral Home, and again Friday April 13, from 9:30-10:30 am at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be 11 am Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Fr. Mike McLain will officiate with entombment to follow at Merrill Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Merrill Historical Society or the Merrill Silver "M" Club. The Waid Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
