George E. Hilliard, age 86, of 10361 Pretty Lake Trail, Plymouth, Indiana, passed away at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 24, 2010 at Miller's Merry Manor in Plymouth. George was born on July 14, 1924 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Dr. George H. and Edna (Marlatt) Hilliard. George received his B.S. from Western Michigan University and earned his M.S. from University of Michigan. George proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Navy during WWII on the U.S.S. Boston and remained active in the Navy Reserves until 1984. George was very active in his community and church. He was President of the District 144 School Board and a member of the District 228 School Board in the southern suburbs of Chicago. He served as election judge for many years. At the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Flossmoor, Illinois, he served as a member of the vestry, served as a lay reader, and sang in the choir. He wrote and played piano for several musicals at the church and played the organ at church. After retirement, he was the treasurer of the pre-school located at St. John's. He retired as a Project Manager from A. Epstein & Sons in Chicago, Illinois. He was also active in helping his son, David, start his own business, I.D.E.A.S. Advertising, Inc. in Chicago. George and Jean had their primary residence in Hazel Crest, Illinois and owned a family home in Plymouth, Indiana on Pretty Lake. In 2006 they moved to their Plymouth home permanently. George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean (Jones) Hilliard of Plymouth; their daughter, Anne Hilliard, of Fishers, Indiana; their son David Hilliard and his wife Nichole of Aurora, Illinois; his granddaughter Rebecca Hilliard of Aurora, Illinois; his daughter-in-law Karen Hilliard (Jeffrey) of Vienna, Virginia; and his sister and brother. George was preceded in death by his sons, Stephen and LCDR Jeffrey Hilliard. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 9, 2011 at 3:00 PM at St. John the Evangelist Church in Flossmoor, Illinois. A short reception will be held following the service. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to Alzheimer's & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, Inc., 922 East Colfax Ave., South Bend, Indiana 46617; Church of St. John the Evangelist, 2640 Park Drive, Flossmoor, Illinois 60422; or St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 400 North Center Street, Plymouth, Indiana 46563. The Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, Indiana 46563 has been entrusted with the arrangements.
