Dr. George Henry Christian, 70, died Nov. 30, 2011, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Born in Knoxville, TN, Nov. 19, 1941, he was the son of Henry Smith Christian, M.D., and Mae Hall Christian. George grew up in Knoxville and graduated from Fulton High School in 1959 and from Vanderbilt University in 1962 with a degree in Chemistry. He then moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane University School of Medicine where he graduated in 1966. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology with a fellowship in vascular radiology at Philadelphia General Hospital. Following his residency, he joined the United States Air Force in 1970. Serving as only one of two vascular radiologists in the Air Force at the time, he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, attaining the rank of Major. After his military service, he practiced medicine in Madison, WI and relocated to Virginia Beach, VA in 1974 and retired in 2006. He served as a clinical adjunct professor at Old Dominion University and as Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. In addition, he also served as the Chair of the Dept. of Radiology at Sentara hospitals in Virginia Beach and Norfolk and served as the President and Vice-President of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine. Throughout his life, George coached youth soccer and basketball. He was a devoted family man who spent countless hours with his four children at their sporting and school functions. His colleagues respected George for his work ethic, knowledge, commitment, and humor. George found great joy in golf and was a member of Greenbrier Country Club in Chesapeake, VA. After retirement George and his wife, Arlie, travelled the world and spent much of their time enjoying their children and grandchildren. George leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Arlie; his daughter and son-in-law, Gwendolyn and Mark Sickels; his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Claudia Christian; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Andrew Harvin; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Lauren Christian; his sister, Rebecca Elizabeth Lawrence; sister-in-laws, Ann and Martha Hamberger; his seven granddaughters, Morgan and Abby Sickels, Samantha, Victoria and Juliana Christian, Corinne and Caralyn Harvin; and his grandson, Owen George Christian; along with numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. The burial will follow in Colonial Grove Memorial Park.
