Dr. George H. Herrmann slipped the earthly bonds in the late evening of January 22, 2011, at the age of 82 years.

He was born George IV Henry Christian Herrmann in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on July 25, 1928 to George III Rudolph Herrmann and Anna Harriet Williams Herrmann. He received a bachelor’s degree from Sul Ross State Teachers College and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

Dr. Herrmann was married to Gloria Jones in Mexia, Texas in June of 1950 and remained so until his death over 60 years later. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 as a medical officer. He practiced general medicine briefly in Castroville, Texas, then beginning in 1956 in Del Rio, Texas, where he practiced for 22 years. He worked for DuPont Chemical as an occupational physician from 1978 until 1994 in La Porte, Texas and La Place, Louisiana. He resided in retirement in Rocksprings, Texas, beginning in 1994.

Through his 22 years of medical practice in Del Rio, Dr. Herrmann had a profound influence on the lives of many people in Val Verde and the surrounding counties, and formed many lasting friendships in the days when family physician also meant family friend. He earned the affectionate nickname of “Doc”, by which he was known to most of his friends.

He dearly loved his family, the outdoors, tinkering in his workshop, dogs, and books. He valued the simple things in life such as humor, good conversation, dry wit, lively debate, and learning.

Dr. Herrmann was preceded in death by a sister, Georgeanna Herrmann Greer, M.D., of San Antonio. He is survived by his wife Gloria of Rocksprings, daughter Harriet Ann Haynes and husband Stephen Haynes of Edwards County, son George R. Herrmann and wife Bonnie L. Herrmann of Lubbock, grandson Teil Haynes and wife Farrah Varga of San Antonio, granddaughter Rebekah Haynes of Austin, and sister, Gretchen Herrmann Runge, M.D., of Austin.

A memorial service for Dr. Herrmann will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 201 Western Drive, Del Rio, Texas, at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 29, 2011. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be sent to the Edwards County EMS, P.O. Box 185, Rocksprings, Texas 78880.
