Mr. George R. Hykes, Sr., 85, of 15012 Hollowell Church Rd., Waynesboro, PA died at 6:50 P.M., Thursday, December 22, 2011 in Select Specialties Hospital, Camp Hill, PA. Born November 18, 1926 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late George I. and Mable Ruth (Leidig) Hykes. He spent his early life in Washington D.C. Mr. Hykes attended Washington D.C. schools and later served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He and his wife, Betty E. (Weaver) Hykes, were married on May 20, 1961 in Hagerstown. Mr. Hykes was a lifelong federal employee. He worked at Bureau of Public Roads, Hagerstown, as a supervisor of the motor pool and later, at the Chambersburg Post Office. Mr. Hykes retired as the classified documents department office manager, Fort Ritchie, on August 1, 1974 after 28 years of federal employment. He was a life member of: Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373, Greencastle, Greencastle Sportsman Club, Greencastle; and a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Harry D. Ziegler VFW, Post #6319, Greencastle. Mr. Hykes was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting, camping and wood carving. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Kimberly S. Hykes, Greencastle, his son, George R. Hykes, Jr. and his wife Teresa, State Line, PA; four grandchildren: Aaron Hykes, Justin Hykes, James Rhoe, Kelly Rhoe; and his great granddaughter, Alexis Rose Hykes. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg with Pastor Robert Tengler officiating. Military honors will be performed by Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599, Chambersburg. Arrangements are being handled by Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington Street, Greencastle.
