George Steven Alkire, 69, of South Bend, passed away on Sunday July 29th in his daughter's residence. Steve was born in Clinton, Indiana on September 9, 1942 to the late George and Ruth (Craft) Alkire. On December 10, 1961, in South Bend, he married Hazel Hale, she preceded him in death on January 31, 2005. Steve worked at Parker's Lumber yard for many years and retired from the Morris Inn of Notre Dame. Steve enjoyed his retirement spending time with friends and family, fishing, playing cards, and watching Chicago Cubs and Bears games. Steve is survived by his children; Jack (Cheryl) Alkire, Willadene Alkire-Farrington (Mark), both of South Bend, and Shell Alkire-Kalka (Jim Jr.), of Edwardsburg, Michigan. Steve was a grandfather of nine: Kasey Conklin, Tiffany (Ryan) Whittaker, Brittany (Leo) Mercado, Chad Rice, Jacklyn Rice, J.J. Kalka, Jared Kalka, Brooke (Chris) Strasser, and Emily Alkire; and a great grandfather of five: Madalyn Rice, McKenzie Maike, Rylee Maike, Kogan Conklin, and Cameron Mercado Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka from 2 until 8PM, and one hour prior to the service. A service celebrating Steve's life will be held at 11AM Wednesday, in the funeral chapel with Rev. Edward Vegh officiating. Burial is to follow in the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger.
