George W. Johnson Jr. 94, of Rockport, MA, wife of Eleanor E. (Light) Johnson, passed away quietly on Monday morning, October 29, 2012, in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester. George was born in Newton, MA on July 16, 1918, the son of the late George W. Johnson Sr. and Irene (Chant) Johnson. George graduated from Newton High School. In May of 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served proudly during World War II as a Corporal. Like his father before him, he spent his entire career in the printing business, working for A. T. Howard Company and Hart Printing Company In Boston. After his retirement, he enjoyed working and puttering around the yard, but most of all, he loved spending time on Long Beach. You could find George walking the sea wall at Long Beach almost any day, up until very recently. He enjoyed telling the history of Long Beach to anyone who was inquisitive and wanted to hear a story. In his younger years he took great enjoyment going out in his rowboat fishing for flounder. Eleanor and he took a very special 50th wedding anniversary cruise to Alaska and enjoyed many trips to Colorado visiting their son, Doug, and his family. George was also very happy to have two of his grandchildren living right across the street. He spent many wonderful years with his children and grandchildren. George is survived by his wife, Eleanor, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage, his two sons, Eric D. Johnson and his wife, Louisa Casadei-Johnson of Rockport and Douglas G. Johnson and his wife, Charlene (Lopez) of Arvada, CO; five grand children, Eric C. and Anna Johnson of Rockport, Lindsay (Johnson) Schwartz, wife of Matthew of San Diego, CA, Ashley Johnson of NY and Megan E. Johnson of Santa Barbara of CA. He was predeceased by his beloved friend and cousin, Robert Blue. Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Burgess & Mackey Funeral Home, 201 Main St. Rockport, MA. A memorial service will be held directly following the visiting hours at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. Burial will be held privately.
