OBITUARY; Gerald Johnson (1929-2013)
Well known and highly respected Ohio County teacher and school administrator Gerald Johnson, age 84, of Lawrenceburg, IN passed away October 12 after a long illness. He was born March 11, 1929 in Milan, IN to Estal Johnson and Louise Wingate Wells. "Jerry" grew up in Rising Sun, IN and graduated from Rising Sun High School in 1947. On June 8, 1951 he married his beloved classmate, Patricia Stow. They resided most of their married life in Rising Sun, both teaching in the school system, and moved to Lawrenceburg after their retirement.
After high school, Jerry went to Taylor University, graduating in 1952, and continued his post graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati. He was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War Era.
Mr. Johnson began his teaching career in Guilford, IN. In 1958 he came to Rising Sun High School where he began as an English teacher, soon being appointed high school principal. He was a dedicated educator until his retirement in 1989. Jerry was highly respected by all with whom he came in contact. He was fair and supportive of those with whom he worked, as well as the students under his management. A former student commented that "he inspired each student to stretch their abilities, and freely shared his wonderful sense of humor with everyone."
In his free time, Jerry loved to read, and work in his beautiful lawn, flower garden and home. He was noted for helping out in neighbors' yards, "just because he wanted to."
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, pat; his sister, Audrey Reinholt and her husband, Jim, of Warsaw, IN; sisters-in-law, Ella Grace Woodfill and Barbara Stow; brother-in-law Donald Stow; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
