Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Hymel, age 78, entered into eternal rest on January 7th, 2012. Beloved husband of 51 years to Ellen Vallette Hymel. Son of the late Esteve Joseph Hymel and Blanche Bourgeois Hymel. Loving father of Jerry J. Hymel, Jr. (Phyllis), John S. Hymel (Kathy), and Jay M. Hymel (Patricia). Proud grandfather of Jennifer Hymel, Kyle Hymel, Andrew Hymel, Ross Hymel, and Nicholas Hymel. Brother of Elizabeth "Betty" Fielding and the late James T. Hymel.
Jerry was born in New Orleans on August 22, 1933 and lived in Terrytown for the last 48 years. He graduated from St. Aloysius High School and attended Loyola University. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He retired as the co-owner and president of Town Credit of Jefferson, Inc. in 1998.
Jerry was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, serving on the Finance Council for many years. He was a member and past president of the Christ the King Holy Name Society and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6870. He received the Order of St. Louis from the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 2002 in recognition of his dedication and service to the church. Jerry loved people, fishing, the Saints and LSU football.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 13th, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Terrytown. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m., officiated by the Reverend Michael Nam Nguyen. Interment will be at All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home.
