Waterford-Gertrude Slate Falvey 77 of Waterford died Tuesday April 28, 2009, peacefully at home with her family after a long battle with cancer. Gert is survived by her husband of nearly 53 years, Richard.
Gert was born on July 7, 1931 to the late Charlotte and Charles Slate. A graduate of Chapman Tech, class of 1949, she worked for the telephone company before staying home to raise her children.
She is survived her daughter Kathleen Falvey MacKenzie of Wrentham, MA., Colleen Falvey Acunzo and son-in- law Francis Acunzo of Branford. Her son Richard C. Falvey Jr. and fiancé Michelle Napert of East Haddam and her daughter Mary Falvey Giragosian and son-in-law Marty of Waterford. Gert was a loving and adored grandmother of eight: Rachael MacKenzie, Katelyn MacKenzie, Amanda MacKenzie, Taylor Falvey, Alexander Acunzo, Zachary Acunzo, Richard Falvey III and Miya Giragosian. She is survived be her brother Park Slate and his wife Eleanor of Kyle of Texas, Clarence Slate and his wife Alma of Loveland, CO and her brother in law Robert Mandell of Leicester England and many nieces and nephews. Gert is predeceased by her sister Gloria Nunes and husband Arthur of New London, and her sister Ruth H. Mandell of Leicester, England.
Gert had an infectious sense of humor and always enjoyed a good laugh. Gert was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed spending winters at her home in Delray Beach Florida. Her smile and loving personality will be missed by all who knew her.
The funeral will assemble at 9:15 a.m. on Friday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
