Glenn H. Lahman, passed peacefully at home among his family on Monday October 10. "The Captain" loved his long time adopted home of Annapolis and was a familiar downtown sight, greeting friends, armed with his iconic Tilly hat and pipe.
Born in Bucyrus, Ohio in 1924, Glenn left his small farming community for engineering school in Valparaiso, IN, and on into service with the 2nd Armored Division seeing action on both the Normandy beaches and the Battle of the Bulge. He proudly wore his original Army uniform in both the St. Patrick's Day Parades in Washington, D.C. and in the local Annapolis Memorial Day parades. His lifelong interest in radio fueled both his hobby of ham radio, and his career of radio and television broadcasting. Glenn was a pioneer in the nascent television industry first as a technician helping to build the new WAAM station on TV Hill in Baltimore, then as Chief Engineer when WAAM became WJZ TV. Glenn's career grew with the burgeoning technology in broadcast engineering to management positions with WBZ-TV Boston, KDKA Pittsburgh, and home to WJZ Baltimore. Always in the forefront of news broadcast technologies, Glenn saw the dawn of Cable News as Engineering Manager of Satellite News Channel in Washington DC, the precursor to CNN.
Glenn loved the Bay, especially from the deck of a boat. He was a member of AYC, the Fleet Reserve, and proud owner of the steam tug Nellie Jeanne. Glenn leaves behind Jeanne, his loving wife of 61 years, one brother, Lyle Lahman of Fostoria, Ohio, daughters Ellen (Boo) Lahman, CAPT, USN, Nurse Corps, Retired and Paige Cumberpatch, sister in law Lynne Fenwick, son in law John Cumberpatch, and granddaughter Lily. He is deeply missed by the legions of friends who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Hospice of the Chesapeake.
A celebration of Glenn Lahman's life will take place on November 12, 2011 at 2 PM at the Annapolis Maritime Museum on 2nd Street in Eastport.
