Gordon Niles (Boots) Barnett, 86, longtime resident of Payson, UT, passed away on January 3, 2012 in Overland Park, KS of complications following intestinal surgery. He was born January 11, 1925 in Payson, UT to Leonard Orville (Boots, Sr.) and Zora Fay Vest Barnett.
Gordon was raised in Payson and graduated from Payson High School in 1943 where he excelled as an athlete, lettering in five sports. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and was a Flight Instructor and Test Pilot during World War II. His passion for sports and flying stayed with him his entire life. He especially loved to golf and was proud of making two holes-in-one.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Von Dalton, on December 31, 1944 in Marfa, TX. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple on July 10, 1965. Gordon bet his friends a penny that he could kiss Von on the first day of school in the first grade. He did, and it scared her so much she ran home. Later that year, Gordon jumped onto the back of Von's father's hay wagon and proudly announced that he was the guy who was going to marry Von when they grew up!
After the War, Boots and Von returned to Payson and he took over his father's business, Boots' Billiards. In 1959 he sold the pool hall and became a salesman for the H.J. Heinz Co. and moved the family to Salt Lake City, UT. From there he was promoted and moved to Long Beach, CA, then on to Overland Park, KS, where he retired as District Sales Manager after 25 years. Boots and Von then moved back "home" to Payson.
Boots was known for his friendliness and willingness to help friends, neighbors, the community, and everyone else in need. He loved serving as a volunteer fireman in Payson, with the Elks Lodge in the Sub-for-Santa program, with the American Legion, the Nebo School District and the Church as sports director. His favorite project was working on the clubhouse at Gladstan Golf Course and later as a starter and marshal there. He enjoyed volunteering and was honored as a Payson City Citizen of the Month. He was a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and served in many callings, his favorite being Executive Secretary in two Bishoprics. He was extremely proud of his pioneer heritage and was a member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers.
Boots is survived by his three daughters and one son: Nancy (Hugh) Fuller, Provo, UT; Cathy Klee, Overland Park, KS; Julie Barnett, Overland Park, KS; and Kelly (Beverly) Barnett, Spokane, WA; sixteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Erin Dalton, Santa Rosa, CA, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Von. Boots will be buried at her side ten years to the day of Vons burial.
Friends and family are invited to the funeral services in celebration of his life on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. at the Peteetneet Academy, 10 South 600 East, Payson, UT. Burial and full military rites will follow at the Payson City Cemetery. Military rites are to be performed by the Utah National Guard Military Honors Unit from Camp Williams and the Payson area American Legion.
