Gwan D. Kimmel, 80, passed away August 2, 2011, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne. A dedicated husband and father, but also dedicated to the Fort Wayne Air National Guard. He joined the U.S. Air Force October 10, 1949, and served in the Korean War. He later joined the Air National Guard in October 10, 1953, where he served for 23 years as a Chief Master Sergeant, retiring in 1986 after 36 years of service. He was born August 3, 1930, in Wawaka, Indiana, to Donald G. Kimmel and Lora Hypes Kimmel. He moved to Ligonier and graduated from Ligonier High School in 1948, along with his future wife, Rose Ellen Conrad. They were married September 27, 1950, at the Ligonier Presbyterian Church. He moved to Fort Wayne in 1953, and was a member of Waynedale United Methodist Church. Gwan loved and cherished all his children and grandchildren. Gwan is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose, a daughter, Cynthia (Greg) Henwood of Brighton, MI, son Robert (Diane) Kimmel of Columbia City, grandchildren, Nathan and Brock Henwood, Tyler and Ashley Kimmel, and sister Naola Reed from Ligonier. He was preceded in death by parents Donald and Lora Kimmel, brother Gerald Kimmel, and sister Nada Headrick. Service is 10:30 am Saturday, August 6, 2011, at D.O. McComb and Son’s Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Ave with calling from 9 am until the service. Rev. Mike Harris officiating. Burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
