Harold Capen Powell Hal Powell a longtime resident of Annapolis died on January 3rd at home from natural causes. Hal was born on December 4th 1947 in Greenwood, Mississippi, the first child of James and Dorothy Powell. The family moved to Maryland in 1958 where he was a member of the first graduating class of Dulaney Senior High School, in Timonium MD. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1969. Hal then went to work for the State of Maryland Highway Administration as a right of way agent. After a short time with the State, he joined Maurice "Spade" Ogle and Gary Westholm to form Ogle, Powell & Westholm a real estate appraisal firm located in Annapolis. Hal continued earning appraisal accreditations and received his MAI (Member Appraisal Institute) in 1983. He served as President of the Baltimore Chapter of the Appraisal Institute in 1994. For over three and a half decades he was a highly respected appraisal expert and a principle in Powell & Westholm and Powell, Peabody & Associates appraisal firms. He retired to a consulting role in mid 2010. Hal enjoyed a full life of sharing his passions with his family and many friends. As a teen, he became a second generation Eagle Scout. Skills learned in becoming an Eagle Scout served him well in his love of the outdoors, camping, whitewater rafting and canoeing trips. He met his wife, Sue, on a whitewater raft trip in 1978. Hal loved traveling, both domestically and abroad. His foreign travel started in 1967 with a summer job in England, on the Isle of Wight. He returned to Europe many times over the years. He and Sue traveled extensively in the US and Canada. Many of Hal's travels involved attending auto races, a sport about which he was passionate – he attended LeMans, Formula One races, the Indy 500 and most recently the Baltimore Grand Prix. Hal was a devoted husband, father, brother, son and friend. He loved to cook and share his widely varying selections of beers with his family and friends. He had a ready smile that welcomed you to his home to share a meal he prepared on the grill. He had a love-hate relationship with the sport of golf while valuing the social aspect at the same time. He read voraciously, enjoying historical fiction and nonfiction. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Susan "Sue" Dietz Powell, his son, Christopher "Chris" Powell, his sister Penney Powell Stevens (Dick) of Severna Park, brother, James "Jim" Powell (Cindy) of Severna Park, sister-in-law Marsha (Claude) Crawford and nephews, Trent Stevens, Jamie Powell, Matt Stevens, David Powell and Cory Powell. A memorial service will be held for Hal on Thursday, January 12 at St. Margaret's Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road, Annapolis at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association http://bit.ly/z2UPQW .
