He was born in Akron, Ohio February 7, 1942 to Earl R. and Bessie (McCracken) Stouffer. He moved to Houghton Lake in 1954 when his parents bought North Shore Hardware. He graduated from Houghton Lake High School in 1960. He met Carol Ann Robinson while a student at University of Akron. They were married August 15,1964. Upon graduation, Hal was inducted into the U.S. Air Force in 1965. He was a Missile Launch Commander at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming obtaining the rank of Captain. For the last ten years he had been working as a computer programmer. One of Hal’s most proud public accomplishments was the creation and expansion of the Markey Township Fire and EMS Department where he served as Chief from the department’s inception in 1973 until 1993. His first love was his home pipe organ and listening to music by J.S. Bach. He also was an airplane pilot, sportsman, and golfer until bad health forced him to give them up. Hal leaves his wife, Carol Ann Stouffer of Houghton Lake; his daughter Linda (Jerry) Krassau of Hudson Wisconsin, his son Craig (Kathleen Allen) Stouffer of Kalamazoo, Michigan, sister Joyce (John) Schlitt of Hacienda Hgts, California and sister Rachel (David) Stanford of Massilon, Ohio, his brother Daniel (Ruth) Stouffer of Houghton Lake and five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
