Harriet Crowley-Hudson (Fran) was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania on November 8, 1922 to the late Harry Crowley and Elizabeth Holmes Harris-Crowley. She was the fourth of four children. After the passing of her mother at age 8, she moved to Newark, New Jersey to live with her uncle Herman Holmes and Aunt Henrietta LaRue who also raised her three siblings. Harriet attended school in the Newark school system and graduated from South Side High School. She met and married Silas Hudson, Sr. and to this union were born six children. Harriet worked as a Sewing Machine Operator for many years before retiring to become a full time mother and housewife who concentrated solely on raising her six children. She truly enjoyed being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Harriet was a baker known for her delicious cakes (especially pineapple upside down) and peach and blackberry cobblers. The family would also gather around for her famous chicken and dumplings. She was an excellent seamstress and she loved making beautiful outfits for her family and friends. Harriet was an active member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Linden, New Jersey where she served on the Women's Club for many years. She enjoyed their monthly meetings where they would fellowship, and eat fine foods and desserts at each other's home. The Women's Club sponsored an Annual Fashion Show featuring Emily Miles and the Belle Meade Models. Silas and Harriet moved to St. Petersburg, Florida and they became members of Bethel Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Harriet was a member there for over 20 years where she served as Secretary to the Pastor. he was also a member of the Missionary Society and was the Church Clerk. Harriet also held the position of administrator for the National Baptist Convention. Harriet relocated to New Jersey once her health started to decline. She resided with her daughter until she became ill. Her daughter and granddaughters kept a watchful eye on her. She enjoyed going out to lunch, dinner and family gatherings on the holidays. She also attended First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens. While residing at McCarrick Care Center in Somerset, New Jersey she joined First Baptist Church. She was often visited by the Ministerial Staff, Missionaries, Senior Ministry, Deacons and Deaconesses. Harriet received monthly communion and scripture readings. She enjoyed their visits and would often smile and sing hymns. Harriet is predeceased by her husband, Silas Hudson, Sr., two sons, Richard and Lamont Hudson, and her siblings, James Harris, Glendora Harris, and Mary Cole. She departed this life on May 31st, 2011. To cherish her in memory, Harriet leaves two daughters, Linda Hudson Starks of Somerset, New Jersey and Pamela Hudson of St. Petersburg, Florida; two sons Silas Hudson, Jr. (Nicole) of Tampa, Florida, and Steven Hudson (Blossom) of Columbus, Ohio; two daughter-in-laws, Janie Hudson of Conyers, Georgia and Yolanda Hudson of St. Petersburg, Florida; 13 grandchildren, Loreen, Michele, Michael, Rachael, Glenna (Tina), Kateena, Justin, Harvis, Ameen, NaDorian, Gaven, Kiye and Romano; 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. God knew you had to leave us But you did not go alone For a part of each of us went with you The night God took you home To some you will soon be forgotten To others just a part of the past But to us who loved and lost you Your memory will always last God gave us strength to face it And courage to bear the blow But what it meant to lose you No one will ever know This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Harriet Crowley-Hudson.
