BERNDT, Hazel (Sniffen) – 86, of Waltham formerly of Winchester, Belmont and Arlington, passed away on April 17th after becoming ill while visiting family in Florida. Devoted and loving mother to the late Edward “Spud” Berndt, III and his wife Maureen of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Laura King of Tequesta, FL; Joanne Berndt of Burlington, MA; and Betsy Freeman and her husband Rick of Belmont, MA. Grandmother to Toby, Peter and Kerri Berdt and Lyndsay and Jonathan Freeman. Great-grandmother to Katie and Tyler Berndt. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Midnight and many good friends and neighbors. Hazel was born and raised in Westport, CT. She was a retired executive secretary for Arkwright-Boston Insurance Company in Waltham, an active member at Plymouth Congregational Church in Belmont and a former member of The Skating Club of Boston. She was an accomplished artist and an excellent cook. She loved animals and enjoyed golf, bowling, going to the movies and playing Scrabble. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 4th at 11 A.M. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 582 Pleasant Street, Belmont. Additional parking is available in the commuter lot behind Belmont Center or in back of firehouse. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Plymouth Congregational Church; the MSPCA, 350 S. Huntington Ave., Boston 02130 (mspca.org) or another animal charity of your choice.
