House Springs, Missouri- Hazel Campbell, 83, a former longtime resident of Brattleboro died peacefully late Friday night, September 23, 2011 in the comfort of her daughter's home in St. Louis where she had resided for the past two years. Hazel was born in Putney on May 11, 1928 the daughter of George and Marguerite (Blakeslee) Stockwell. She was raised and educated in East Putney attending Putney Central School and was a graduate of Saint Michael's High School in Brattleboro. She went on to graduate from the Providence School of Nursing in Holyoke, Mass where she received her nursing degree. Hazel worked as a Registered Nurse at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Thompson House Nursing Home and at the former Linden Lodge Nursing Home where she retired from in 1990. She was known for her excellent nursing skills as well as being a compassionate caregiver. Following retirement, with her husband she enjoyed wintering in Mount Dora, Florida. For many years she served on the Brattleboro School Board and took a great interest in the wellbeing of the children in Brattleboro. She also had a great interest in local and national politics. A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church. Of her leisure time activities, Hazel enjoyed music, gardening and time shared with her family. She faithfully attended both her children and grandchildren sporting events and their other endeavors. On January 5, 1952, at Saint Michael's Church she was married to Peter Kenneth,"Ken" Campbell. Her husband of 50 years predeceased her in January 2003. Survivors include two sons, Peter and his wife Susan of South Attleboro, Mass, Michael and his wife Susan of Dummerston, two daughters, Kathy Lovelace and husband David of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Kimberly Lakin and her husband Tom of St. Louis, one sister, Arlene Kathan of Brattleboro and seven grandchildren, Katrina, Matthew, Morgan, Bridgette, Lindsey, Allison and Annie. Additionally she leaves many nieces and nephews. Hazel was predeceased by four brothers, Earl, Raymond, William and Harold Stockwell and one sister, Margie Callahan. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Michael's Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Richard O'Donnell, V.F., pastor, celebrant. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Parish Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Thursday from 7 to 9 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Hazel's name may be made to: Saint Michael's School, 47 Walnut Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301 in care of Elaine Beam, principal.
