Cook, Helen E. 95 04/10/1915 07/12/2010 Helen was born in Portland to Roy and Esther (Berglund) Garratt. She grew up in Portland, Mosier, and Devil's Lake. She graduated from Grant High School in 1934, was active at Centenary-Wilbur Methodist Church, the People's Camera Club, and the Mazama Club, climbing Mount Hood in 1943. Helen joined the U.S. Navy as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), serving in the photo lab in Washington, D.C. She met Bob Cook skiing on Mount Hood, and they married in 1946. They raised four children and worked together at their business, Cook's Appliance Repair. Helen, a gifted and prolific artist, was a member of the Oregon Society of Artists. She knitted sweaters for charity, loved baseball, played the violin, was an avid hiker, and was handy with a hammer. Helen passed away peacefully in her home of complications from Parkinson's disease. She is survived by her children, Don and Grace Cook, Curt and Charlene Cook, Bev and Nick Insley, and Barbara and Aaron Lance; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Edith Knope. Her beloved Bob; and her brothers, Douglas and Dick, predeceased her. Please join us at her memorial service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, in Apostolic Faith Church, 5601 S.E. Duke St., Portland.
