Helen Toscano, 98, of Thimble Farms Rd., Branford, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2012, at her home. She was born November 27, 1913, in New Haven, a daughter of the late Luigi and Angela Palmieri Papa. Helen was the wife of the late Philip W. Ryan of Thomaston, CT and the late Honorable Alfred A. Toscano of New Haven. She was the mother of Philip W. Ryan, Jr. (Jill) of Branford, Dr. John L. Ryan (Karen) of Philadelphia, PA, and Gerald P. Ryan (Janet) of Branford. She is survived by her loving ten grandchildren, Sean, Brent, Scot, Liza, Philip, Paige, Michael, Diana, Julia and Jack; and six adoring great-grandchildren, Sean, Madalyn, Charlotte, Ryan, Silas and Wiley. She also leaves a brother, Anthony A. Papa of Branford, and a sister, Camille Gagliardi of Hamden, as well as several beloved nieces and nephews, most particularly her niece Linda DeLaurentis of Branford, her frequent companion in her later years. She was predeceased by three brothers, Donald Papa, John Papa, and George Papa, three sisters, Peggy DeLaurentis, Lucy Nesta, Rose Damling, and several nieces and nephews. Helen was a registered nurse at Bristol Hospital in Bristol, CT, until her retirement in 1967. She was an avid sports fan, most particularly the New York Yankees. Helen loved to read and spent many years vacationing in Florida with her family. Her primary focus was always her family and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, CT, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 13, 2012. Burial will be private. .
