SCHNEIDER - Helmut A., 84, of Clifton, died on March 15, 2010 at home. Born in Plauen, Germany, Mr. Schneider emigrated to the U.S. in 1956. He met his wife of 52 years, Hilda, while attending evening English Language classes at Clifton High School and they married in 1957. Mr. Schneider began his career as a tool & die maker. After taking classes at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken he expanded his career and retired as a mechanical engineer and designer. Hobbies that he enjoyed with his wife and family include travelling, hiking, skiing and camping. In 1979, the National Ski Patrol, of which Mr. Schneider was a volunteer for 40 years, awarded him their highest honor, the National Number, 5555. He was also a 50 year member of the Union County Hiking Club and volunteered for over 25 years as an Appalachian Hiking Trail Maintainer. Mr. Schneider also was a long-time member and volunteer with the Sportsfriends Soccer Club in Wayne; a long-time member of AARP; and was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Clifton. Survivors include: his devoted wife, Hilda (nee Schneider); his loving daughter, Eleonor Schneider and her husband, Fred Chapman of Newcastle, WA; his beloved grandson, Alex Schneider Chapman; and his dear brother, Gottfried Schneider of Plauen, Germany. Funeral services will be Friday 11:00 am First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1337 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton, NJ 07013. Please meet at church. Private cremation will follow. Visiting will be held Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Evangelical Lutheran Church or Hospice of NJ, 400 Broadacres Dr., Bloomfield, NJ 07003.
