Henry B. Armstrong, Sr.
Greenville, SC

Henry Bouchier Armstrong, Sr., 90, departed this life Sunday morning, February 5, 2012 to join his beloved wife, Martie in heaven.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Dr. James Crawford Armstrong and Mamie Townsend Fraser Armstrong.

Young Henry developed a strong work ethic by working in the family business, the Armstrong Pharmacy on Main Street in Greenville until 1940. He was a member of that Greatest Generation and honorably served in the US Navy for 6 years during World War II. Following his discharge he attended USC and earned his degree in two and a half years. He returned home to Greenville and after a five year stint with Blue Cross Blue Shield, he went into business for himself, forming what became Henry Armstrong Tire Store which he operated for over thirty years.

In retirement, he enjoyed supporting Martie's many volunteer activities including Meals on Wheels and various church interests. He enjoyed reading and playing chess and bridge. He followed USC and Furman sports and was always happy to offer an opinion on politics or to demonstrate the proper golf swing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Clark Armstrong in 2009 and a sister, Shadie T. Hoffman and three brothers, James C., Thomas B., and Eugene S. Armstrong.
He is survived by his children, son, Henry "Bo" Armstrong, Jr. and wife, Jan of Lexington, SC; and daughter, Fraser Faress of Gastonia, NC; a brother, Dixon F. Armstrong; four grandchildren, Christian McDermott, Henry B. Armstrong, III, Dixon Faress and Daniel Faress; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 3:00pm at the Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Matthew Miller officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2:00pm until service time in the church parlor.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Greenville ARP Church, 741 Cleveland Street, Greenville, 29601.
