Henry E Caruso
Born February 9, 1916 Pt. Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, died on April 15, 2009, Middleburg Hts, Ohio. Attended Pt. Pleasant High School where he received the math medal for highest achievement in math. He served in WWII as 1st lieutenant squadron Armament Officer in the 9th army air force, received the Purple Heart and was decorated with a Bronze Star for meritorious service. In 1948 received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY and MBA at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. Worked at CEI for 35 years and retired as systems planning engineer.
A member of ETA KAPPA NU, he held offices in the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers and Engineers Foundation of Ohio, and honored by the Rensselaer Alumni Committee for scholarship work in Cleveland. As a member of the Cleveland Exchange Club he received the title of “Mr. Freedom Shrine” by Mayor George Voinovich for his dedication on establishing the 10 Freedom Shrines here, a collection of documents that represent the founding principals of American freedom. He was Treasurer of the Cleveland Ethical Culture Society and once featured in the Plain Dealer as a look-alike to Vince Lombardi. An avid reader, and scrabble player, which he tried to teach to seniors at the Middleburg Hts Senior Center. Active dancer (square, contra and folk) was president of “Contra Kings and Queens” for 25 years. He danced with the Lloyd Shaw Foundation in Colorado, California, Kentucky, West Virginia, North Carolina, Belgium, Germany and England.
Survived by his sister, Assunta (Sunny) Sistad, brother Emidio (Junior) (Rosalie) Caruso; wife, Dorothy, to whom he was married 68 years. Daughters: Marie of Poughkeepsie, NY and Annette of San Francisco, CA. Sons: Raymond (Marcia) of Laguna Beach, CA and Robert (Cindy) of Shaker Heights, Ohio. Grandchildren: Olivia and Nicholas, Shaker Heights, Ohio, Joseph, Arcata CA, Aaron, London England, Michael (Ann), Indianapolis, IN, Lisa, Wichita, KS. Great Grandchildren: Cooper, Wichita, KS, Gwen and Ellen, Indianapolis IN.
