Henry Gardner Hendrix
Greenville, SC

Henry Gardner Hendrix, 98, husband of the late Clelia Derrick Hendrix, died Thursday, January 26, 2012. He was a resident of Westminster Retirement Center.

Born July 27, 1913, in Newberry, S. C., Gardner was the son of Henry Hampton Hendrix and Lydia Bishop Hendrix. He was a graduate of Newberry College. He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Hendrix retired in 1982 from the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Greenville after 30 years of service as accountant, office manager, and comptroller. Previously, he was a public school teacher, principal, and superintendent of schools before entering a career in accounting at Liberty Life Insurance Company.

Mr. Hendrix was an active member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church chairing the Administrative Board, Council on Ministries, Staff Parish Relations Committee, and Finance Committee. He served as president of the John M. Holmes Sunday School Class, Church Lay Leader, Greenville District Lay Leader, and as a frequent delegate to the S.C. Annual Conference.

Mr. Hendrix, a long-time resident of Botany Woods, was active in many Greenville civic organizations. As a member of the Greenville Lions Club, he served as president and received a 50 year perfect attendance award in 1996. He was chairman of the Demosthenes Foundation, chairman of United Speech and Hearing, and was on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Salvation Army. He was instrumental in the development of United Ministries of Greenville and Asbury Hills Methodist Camp.

Mr. and Mrs. Hendrix established endowed scholarships at Columbia College and the S.C. United Methodist Foundation.

Surviving are daughters Susan Hendrix Redmond (John) of Greenville and Marilyn Hendrix Shedlock (Carl) of Alexandria, Va.; grandchildren Jody Redmond (Angie), Meredith Redmond Billig (Allen), and Caroline Shedlock; great-grandchildren Jack and Kate Redmond, and Mac, Drew, Charlie, and Ben Billig; and niece Frances McCullough of Newberry.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by sisters Cora Lee H. Boozer and Annie H. Epting, and brothers Claud Hendrix, Colie Hendrix, and Horace Hendrix.

The memorial service will be held Sunday, January 29, at 3:00 p.m. at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church with visitation immediately following in Orders parlor.
