Herman Hurst, 89, passed away peacefully on 20 May, 2011, due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease. He was born in Jackson County, Kentucky on September 16, 1921, the son of Luther and Bessie (Phillips) Hurst. He was a proud member of the United States Marine Corp, serving as a Corporal in the Third Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division during World War II. He was wounded during the battle of Guadalcanal. Herman was a Blue Lodge Mason and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by his wife, Dinah Hurst of Chesapeake, VA; daughters, Diana Flinchum of Aurora, IN and Michelle Lynch of St Augustine, FL; a stepson, Bill Fittro of Chesapeake, VA; brothers, Lonnie Hurst of Somerset, KY and Herbert Hurst of Myrtle Beach, SC; three sisters, Anna Mae Richardson of Somerset, KY, Geneva Pendelton of Sand Gay, KY and Maggie Hoover of Sarasota, FL; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Sherman Hurst; and sisters, Dorothy Hurst and Margie J. Lester; and his daughter, Melissa Reeves. Visitation will be held at the Hollomon Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel on Monday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society.
