HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Horace Fleming Jr., the seventh president of the University of Southern Mississippi, has died at 65.
Fleming died Friday at his home in Macon, Ga., the university announced. The cause of death was not given.
Fleming led Southern Mississippi during 1997-2001, a period in which the university said 19 new programs and its first major fundraising campaign - eventually raising more than $100 million - were launched. The university also received technology upgrades, a boost in research funding and a $150 million building program.
Fleming, who had been executive vice president and provost at Mercer University before coming to Hattiesburg, returned to Mercer after leaving Southern Mississippi. Last year, Mercer appointed him a distinguished university professor.
