Patriotic Emblem

Hayes: On April 1, 2012, Howard Lewis Moffitt, Jr. went to be with his Lord.

Mr. Moffitt started his life in California, and at a young age joined the Merchant Marines. His career in the Merchant Marines brought him to the Peninsula area where he established his own business, Moffitt Construction Company, in 1955. Mr. Moffitt made his home in Hampton until 1965, when he moved his family to Gloucester, where he presently resided.

After Mr. Moffitt retired from his construction company, he enjoyed his home on Sarahs Creek, where he laid down his construction tools and picked up his gardening tools. There he cultivated his love and passion for gardening. His happiest times were outside in his greenhouse or in his yard, perfecting his beautiful gardens.

Mr. Moffitt was a past member of the Lions Club, and until his death, was an active member of the Rotary Club where he was most proud of his accomplishment of being named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Gloucester County.

He is preceded in death by his parents Mae Cecelia Perry Moffitt and Howard Lewis Moffitt, Sr.; a sister, Marian Ellen Risch; a brother, Robert Eugene Moffitt; a son- in-law, Samuel Ray Jenkins and a wife of 38 years, Minnie Theodosia (Chic) Moffitt.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Nancy Karen Moffitt; his children: Constance Lynn Jenkins; Cynthia May Hall (Mike); Howard Moffitt, III (Rachel); and Steven Craig Moffitt, Sr. (Susan); and two step daughters Kelsey Lynn McCallum (Caleb) and Anissa Kay Morris (Adam); nine grandchildren: Gina H. Keesee (Michael); Theodosia H. Robertson (Derek); James Michael Hall, Jr. (Stacey); Christopher Jason Moffitt (Anna); Jessica M. Maples (Matt); Steven C. Moffitt, Jr.; Amanda Faye Jenkins (Denis); Jennifer Lynn Jenkins (Danny); Whitney B. Adkins (Brett); 15 great grandchildren.; a sister Muriel Catherine Barry, numerous nieces and nephews.; and last but not least, his dear employee and friend, Mr. Larry Shrock, who was by his side for many, many years.

A celebration of life will be held on April 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Gloucester.

The family requests that donations in Howard's memory please be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Joanne Gallagher, P. O. Box 43, Ware Neck, Virginia 23178 or the Gloucester Point Rotary Club, P.O. Box 421, White Marsh, Virginia 23183.
