Howard Thomas Tonning, 78, of Bomar Drive, Chesapeake, VA, passed away on July 9, 2010, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Flushing, NY he was the son of the late Hans and Eleanor Tonning. Howard was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and also retired from Norfolk Dredging Company as an engineer. He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Elizabeth Richardson Tonning, and is survived by two daughters, Darlene Field and Cynthia L. Zimmerman and husband Robert, all of Portsmouth, VA; two brothers, John Tonning and wife Mary Ann of West Palm Beach, FL and Curtis Tonning and wife Stephanie of Shelton, CT; two sisters, Sharyn Johnston of Chesapeake, VA and Helen Fernandez and husband Alex of Valley Stream, NY; a grandson, Marshall Field, III; a granddaughter, Meghan E. Field. The family will receive friends at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel on Monday, July 12, 2010, from 7 to 9 p.m. The Celebration of His Life will he held in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 2010. Burial will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be offered the family at www.snellingsfuneralhome.com.
