Hugh Bryson Ratterree, of Moore, died Sunday, February 19, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Albert Janet Garrison Ratterree and Thomas Lee Ratterree.

He graduated from Rock Hill High School and served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict on the USS Antietam and the USS Yorktown. Following his Navy tour, he attended Pfeiffer College where he met his future wife, Jane Goins. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Anderson, South Carolina where he transferred to Clemson College.

He worked for the Milliken Corporation in Pendleton, South Carolina and transferred to Spartanburg where he worked for Milliken Tetra Pak and Milliken Research Corporation. He was recognized for outstanding contributions to the company on multiple occasions.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, John Eric (Allison) Ratterree; and twelve nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his therapy dog, Mixie. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Edith Strait, Sue Truesdale, and Martha Spalding; and two brothers, Albert Ratterree and Thomas Ratterree.

Hugh had a great love of nature and was most happy when hiking in the mountains of North Carolina and in Arizona. He was very creative and enjoyed working on different projects with his son. John credits him with teaching him many skills involved in the building and repair of things and instilling a love of reading.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Upper Room Sunday School Class.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 24, 2012, at Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Alex Stevenson, the Rev. John Ropp, and the Rev. Betty Griffin. Visitation will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Area Conservancy (SPACE), 100 East Main Street, Suite B, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
