HUMBERTO "BETO" CARDENAS October 10, 1951-July 29, 2009 Husband, Father, Brother, Friend and Mentor…….Beto Cardenas was proudly married to Agustina "Tina" Cardnas and proud father of two men: Humberto "Tito" Cardenas, Jr. and Gilberto Cardenas. While he was with us, Beto touched many individual lives. His commanding presence allowed him to turn many head in a room. Beto's love for the fame of basketball is deeply rooted back to his playing day at J.W. Nixon High School and Laredo Junior College. After his playing days were over, Beto became a Senior Serviceman employee at CenterPoint Energy for 28 years. His flexible schedule allowed him to coach many youth teams of Laredo and organize the first high school boy's summer league with the assistance of local high school coaches and the City of Laredo Parks and Recreation. However, his true love was coaching the United Lady Longhorns Junior Varsity and Varsity squads during spring and summer leagues. His love for basketball grew stronger while coaching these girls. To many people, Beto's tall and thick structure gave many the impression that he was a mean and strict person. However, to his family, ex-players, friends, and colleagues, Beto was a gentle giant with a teddy bear heart. Beto was the type of person that would take off his shirt if you didn't have one and generous from all sorts of angles. His ability to motivate and no nonsense attitude allowed people to cling onto him. Beto had many friends. However, as time passed us one friend wanted him more. Only the MAN upstairs knows why he does certain things. But overall, our loss is Heaven's gain. Cardenas Family H2AGOC He is preceded in death by his Mother, Hortencia Cardenas, Sister, Diana Medina, Brother, Oscar Cardenas, Nephews, Oscarito Cardenas, Mike Medina and Mother-in-law, Blasa Bueno. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Agustina O. Cardenas, Sons, Humberto Cardenas, Jr., Gilberto Cardenas, Sisters, Maria(Alfredo†) Perez, Nelda (Rogelio) Negrete, Sonia (Fermin†) De La Garza, Hilda Cardenas, Brother, Javier (Rosie) Cardenas, Sisters-in-law, Gloria (Humberto) Martinez, Rosalinda (Ernesto) Castro, San Juanita (Javier) Zamora. He is also survived by his beloved friend, Chris Alonzo, nephews, nieces and other loved relatives. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Joe Jackson Funeral Chapels, 1410 Jacaman Rd. from 5 to 9 in the evening. A Vigil will commence at 8 in the evening. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. Cortege will depart at 8:30 a.m. from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels.
